Signs You Need to Have Your Breast Implants Replaced | HuntsvilleBreast implants can be a life-changing decision for many, providing increased confidence and satisfaction with one’s appearance. However, like any surgical procedure, breast implants may require maintenance over time. If you’re wondering whether it’s time to consider a breast revision, there are several signs to look out for. Consulting a cosmetic surgeon can help determine if replacing or adjusting your implants is necessary. In this blog post, we will explore the various indicators that suggest it might be time to replace your breast implants. McLain Surgical Arts, led by cosmetic surgeon Dr. Landon D. McLain, provides breast revision to patients in Huntsville, Madison, Florence, Decatur, Scottsboro, Cullman, Athens, Alabama, and surrounding locations.

Changes in Breast Shape or Size

Over time, natural changes in your body can affect the shape and size of your breasts, even with implants. Factors like aging, weight fluctuations, and hormonal changes can alter how your breasts look and feel. These changes may result in noticeable differences in symmetry, size, or overall appearance that could affect your satisfaction. Additionally, pregnancy and breastfeeding can significantly impact breast tissue, potentially leading to the need for a revision. If these alterations make you feel unhappy or self-conscious, it might be a sign that a breast revision is needed. A cosmetic surgeon can assess these changes and recommend whether new implants or other corrective procedures can help achieve your desired look.

Pain or Discomfort in the Breast Area

Pain or discomfort in the breast area can be a sign that something is wrong with your implants. Persistent or severe pain might point to complications such as implant displacement, capsular contracture, or other underlying issues. Capsular contracture, for instance, occurs when scar tissue forms tightly around the implant, causing hardness and discomfort. Additionally, implant displacement can lead to uneven pressure and discomfort. If you experience ongoing pain, it’s crucial to consult a cosmetic surgeon. They can help diagnose the cause and recommend appropriate treatments, which might include a breast revision. Don’t ignore persistent discomfort, as early intervention can prevent further complications and help maintain your overall well-being.

Implant Rupture or Leakage

Implant rupture or leakage is a clear indicator that you might need a breast revision. Saline implants typically deflate rapidly if they rupture, making it relatively easy to spot a problem. Conversely, silicone implants may not show immediate visible changes due to the nature of the silicone gel inside, which can make detecting a rupture more challenging. Regular imaging tests, such as MRI or ultrasound, are useful tools for identifying ruptures that are not immediately apparent.

Ruptures can occur due to various factors, including trauma, aging of the implant, or even during mammograms. If you suspect that your implant has ruptured, it’s imperative to consult a cosmetic surgeon as soon as possible. They can conduct the necessary evaluations to confirm whether a rupture has occurred and discuss the best course of action for replacement. Early detection and intervention can prevent potential complications like inflammation or changes in breast shape and size.

Capsular Contracture

Capsular contracture occurs when scar tissue forms tightly around the implant, causing hardness and distortion. This condition can lead to discomfort and an unnatural appearance of the breast. It varies in severity, and while mild cases might not require intervention, more severe cases often necessitate a breast revision. Consulting a cosmetic surgeon can provide clarity on whether a capsulectomy or other revision procedures are necessary to alleviate symptoms and restore a more natural look and feel.

Visible Rippling or Wrinkling

Visible rippling or wrinkling of breast implants can be an aesthetic concern for many individuals. This issue is often more pronounced in those with thinner breast tissue or saline implants, where the texture of the implant is more likely to be felt and seen through the skin. The appearance of rippling or wrinkling can detract from the smooth, natural look that many seek to achieve through breast augmentation.

Several factors contribute to this problem, including the type of implant, its placement, and the amount of natural breast tissue present. For example, saline implants are more prone to rippling than silicone implants due to their fluid nature. Similarly, implants placed above the muscle (subglandular placement) may exhibit more rippling compared to those placed under the muscle (submuscular placement), as there is less tissue covering the implant.

If rippling or wrinkling becomes noticeable and bothersome, it may be worthwhile to consider a breast revision. Consulting with a cosmetic surgeon can help identify the underlying causes and determine the best approach to address the issue. Potential solutions might include switching to a different type of implant, such as silicone, which is less likely to ripple. Another option could be to reposition the implant to a submuscular location, providing more tissue coverage and reducing the appearance of ripples.

Additional corrective measures may involve using fat grafting techniques to add volume and smooth out the skin over the implant. This procedure can help achieve a more natural and aesthetically pleasing result. Consulting with a skilled cosmetic surgeon will allow you to explore the best options tailored to your unique situation, ensuring a satisfactory outcome.

Implant Position Changes

Implants can sometimes shift from their original position over time, leading to asymmetry or an unnatural look. This can be influenced by factors such as gravity, fluctuations in weight, or even incorrect placement during the initial surgery. For instance, weight gain or loss can change the amount of tissue supporting the implant, causing it to move. Gravity can also exert a downward pull over the years, affecting the implant’s position.

Another contributing factor can be the natural aging process, where the skin and tissues lose elasticity and firmness. This can make the implants appear to sag or shift, resulting in a less youthful and symmetrical appearance. Similarly, physical trauma or intense physical activity can also cause implants to shift.

If you notice that your breasts appear uneven or that the implants have moved from their original placement, it’s essential to consult a cosmetic surgeon. They can evaluate the degree of displacement and discuss the most appropriate corrective measures. These measures may include repositioning the implants, adjusting the implant pockets, or even using a different type of implant to better suit your current anatomy.

Additionally, some patients opt for a breast lift in conjunction with a breast revision to address sagging and achieve a more lifted and youthful contour. Your cosmetic surgeon will provide a comprehensive evaluation and recommend a personalized treatment plan to restore balance and enhance the appearance of your breasts.

Desire for an Aesthetic Update

Aesthetic preferences can change over time, and what you once found appealing might no longer match your current vision. Perhaps you originally opted for a particular size or shape, but now find yourself wanting a different look. Some individuals may desire a more natural appearance, opting to switch from saline to silicone implants, which often provide a softer feel and more natural appearance. Others might wish to adjust the size—either increasing for a more dramatic effect or decreasing for a subtler, understated look.

The aging process can also influence your aesthetic goals. Over the years, the contours of your body may change, making the original implant choice less suitable. For instance, as skin loses elasticity, a previously ideal size might now appear less flattering. Aesthetic trends in the fashion and beauty industry can also impact your preferences, inspiring a desire for an update that aligns with contemporary styles.

Another consideration might be your lifestyle. Physical activities, career changes, or personal milestones can all influence your preference for breast appearance. Athletes, for example, might prefer smaller implants that better accommodate their active lifestyle.

Ultimately, a breast revision can help you achieve your evolving aesthetic aspirations. Whether it’s about aligning with current fashion trends, adapting to changes in your body, or simply fulfilling a personal desire for a fresh look, consulting a cosmetic surgeon can provide you with the options and guidance you need. They will work with you to understand your vision and recommend the most suitable implant type, size, and surgical approach to achieve the results you desire.

Regular Check-Ups and Monitoring

Routine check-ups with your cosmetic surgeon are essential for the long-term health and integrity of your breast implants. These appointments allow your surgeon to monitor any subtle changes in the condition of the implants and surrounding tissues. Regular evaluations can identify early signs of complications, such as capsular contracture, implant displacement, or potential ruptures. By catching these issues early, you can address them before they develop into more significant problems that might require more complex interventions. Additionally, routine monitoring can help ensure that your implants are maintaining their intended look and feel, and provide an opportunity to discuss any aesthetic changes you might be considering. Regular imaging tests, like MRIs or ultrasounds, may be recommended to detect issues not visible to the naked eye. Staying proactive with your follow-up care not only helps preserve your desired appearance but also supports your overall health and well-being. Consult with your cosmetic surgeon to establish a check-up schedule that aligns with your specific needs and implant type.

Can a Breast Lift Change Breast Size? | Huntsville Cosmetic SurgeryIf you are considering a breast lift, you may be wondering if this procedure will alter your breast size. Many women are unsure of what to expect when it comes to the results of a breast lift. In this blog post, we will delve into the topic to uncover the truth about whether a breast lift can change your breast size. McLain Surgical Arts, led by cosmetic surgeon Dr. Landon D. McLain, provides breast lift to patients in Huntsville, Madison, Florence, Decatur, Scottsboro, Cullman, Athens, Alabama, and surrounding locations.

Understanding the Basics of a Breast Lift

A breast lift, medically termed as mastopexy, is a transformative surgical intervention aimed at elevating and reshaping the contours of sagging breasts to a more desirable and youthful position. This procedure meticulously lifts the breast tissue, repositions the nipple and areola to a higher location, and removes excess skin to firm up the breasts. Unlike breast augmentation, which primarily focuses on increasing the breast volume through implants, a breast lift is concerned with correcting droopiness and improving the breast’s shape and position.

One of the common misconceptions about a breast lift is its impact on breast size. While the primary purpose of mastopexy is not to alter the size but to rejuvenate the breast’s appearance, the procedure might result in the breasts appearing slightly smaller due to the removal of excess skin and tissue tightening. However, the essence of this procedure lies in enhancing the breast’s aesthetic by achieving a lifted, more perky profile rather than significantly changing its size.

For individuals who may be experiencing a loss of breast volume or wish for a fuller appearance, a breast lift can be combined with augmentation. This dual approach allows for the enlargement of the breast size while also addressing sagging, providing a comprehensive solution to multiple aesthetic concerns.

It’s also worth noting that during a breast lift, adjustments can be made to the areola to create a more proportionate look in relation to the newly lifted breasts. These modifications contribute to the overall enhanced appearance of the breasts post-surgery.

In summary, understanding the specific objectives and outcomes of a breast lift is crucial for individuals contemplating this procedure. By focusing on the upliftment and reshaping aspects, mastopexy offers a solution for those looking to restore a youthful contour to their breasts, with size alteration being a secondary effect rather than the primary goal.

Differentiating Between Breast Lift and Augmentation

Understanding the distinctions between a breast lift and breast augmentation is pivotal for anyone contemplating cosmetic surgery to enhance the appearance of their breasts. A breast lift, or mastopexy, is primarily designed to address issues related to sagging and loss of firmness. It involves removing excess skin and tightening the surrounding tissue to raise and reshape the breast. This procedure aims to restore the breasts to a more youthful stance without significantly altering their overall volume.

In contrast, breast augmentation is a procedure focused on increasing the size of the breasts. This is achieved through the insertion of implants—either saline or silicone—or in some cases, through fat transfer. Breast augmentation caters to individuals looking to enhance the volume of their breasts, whether for aesthetic balance, reconstruction post-mastectomy, or personal satisfaction with their breast size.

The key difference lies in the intended outcome of each procedure. A breast lift is best suited for those who are satisfied with the volume of their breasts but seek to correct drooping and achieve a more elevated and contoured profile. On the other hand, breast augmentation is the choice for individuals who primarily desire larger breasts.

While both procedures can dramatically enhance the appearance of the breasts, they serve different purposes. A breast lift can often make the breasts appear fuller and more rounded due to the repositioning of the breast tissue, but it does not add volume. Augmentation, however, directly increases the size of the breasts through artificial means.

Selecting between these two options depends entirely on the specific aesthetic goals and physical requirements of the individual. For those who wish both to lift and enlarge their breasts, a combination of both procedures can be performed to achieve the desired outcome. Understanding these distinctions is crucial in making an informed decision that aligns with one’s aesthetic goals.

The Impact of a Breast Lift on Perceived Breast Size

A breast lift, while not directly increasing the volume of the breasts, has a profound effect on their perceived size and overall appearance. The procedure’s ability to reposition and reshape the breast tissue creates an enhanced silhouette that many find to be more aesthetically pleasing and fuller-looking. The artful removal of excess skin and the strategic tightening of tissue elevate the breasts, offering them a more youthful and perky profile. This elevation and reshaping can lead to the breasts appearing more voluminous, despite the actual volume remaining unchanged.

Additionally, the adjustment of the areola and nipple to a higher, more forward position can further influence the perception of breast size. A smaller, more proportionately sized areola in relation to the newly shaped breast can accentuate the illusion of a fuller breast. This visual modification plays a significant role in the overall satisfaction with the breast lift procedure, as it contributes to the appearance of a more balanced and harmonious upper body contour.

It’s also worth considering that the psychological impact of these physical changes can be significant. The transformation achieved through a breast lift may enhance an individual’s self-image and confidence, which can, in turn, influence their perception of their body and breast size. The combination of physical and psychological enhancements contributes to the perception of increased breast size and can be a pivotal factor in the decision-making process for those contemplating a breast lift.

This nuanced understanding of how a breast lift impacts the appearance and perception of breast size underscores the importance of clear communication with a surgeon about desired outcomes and the potential of a breast lift to meet those aesthetic goals.

Realistic Expectations from a Breast Lift

When contemplating a breast lift, it’s vital to align your expectations with the procedural realities. This transformative procedure is designed to rejuvenate the breasts by raising them to a more youthful position and enhancing their overall shape. The improvements are primarily aesthetic, focusing on elevation and firmness, rather than size enhancement. It’s the sagging and shape that are corrected, not the volume.

Individuals considering this surgery should understand that while the breast lift can remarkably improve the appearance of the breasts, making them look more perky and potentially fuller due to their heightened position and reshaped contour, it does not add volume. This distinction is important for those whose primary concern is enhancing breast size. In scenarios where an increase in breast size is desired, exploring the option of combining a breast lift with augmentation might be advisable.

Engaging in a thorough consultation with a plastic surgeon can provide valuable insights into what can realistically be achieved with a breast lift. During these discussions, it’s crucial to convey your aesthetic goals clearly. The surgeon can then offer guidance on whether a breast lift alone can meet your expectations or if additional procedures are recommended to achieve your desired outcome.

It’s also beneficial to review before and after photos of breast lift patients during your consultation. This can offer a visual understanding of the potential changes and help set realistic expectations for the procedure’s impact on your own body. Remember, each individual’s body reacts differently to surgery, and outcomes can vary. Setting realistic expectations is the foundation for satisfaction with your breast lift results.

Making the Decision: Is a Breast Lift Right for You?

Deciding on a breast lift involves careful consideration of what you hope to achieve with your body aesthetics. This surgical procedure excels at elevating and reshaping breasts that have experienced sagging, providing a more youthful and uplifted appearance. For those whose primary concern is addressing droopiness and improving the breast’s silhouette rather than increasing their size, a breast lift could offer the transformation sought.

It’s essential to analyze your expectations and assess whether they align with the outcomes a breast lift is designed to deliver. A key factor in this decision-making process is understanding that while the procedure can make the breasts appear more perky and even fuller due to their new, lifted position, it does not add volume. For individuals desiring not only to lift but also to enhance their breast size, combining a breast lift with augmentation might be a more fitting approach.

Engagement in a detailed discussion with a board-certified plastic surgeon can illuminate the path toward achieving your aesthetic goals. Such a consultation will enable you to explore the possibilities of a breast lift and whether it matches your desired end results. Additionally, examining before and after photos of patients who have undergone a breast lift can provide a clearer expectation of the potential transformation.

Your surgeon can offer personalized advice and recommendations, taking into account your unique body structure, the degree of sagging, and your overall aesthetic aspirations. The choice to pursue a breast lift, either as a standalone procedure or in conjunction with augmentation, should be grounded in a realistic expectation of outcomes and a thorough understanding of what the procedure can and cannot achieve. This thoughtful approach ensures that the decision to proceed is in harmony with your vision for your body’s appearance.

Do I Need a Breast Lift or a Breast Reduction? | Huntsville SurgeryWomen often struggle with the decision of whether to opt for a breast lift or breast reduction. Both procedures are designed to alter the size and shape of the breasts, but the differences between them can be confusing. A breast lift focuses on lifting and reshaping sagging breasts, while a breast reduction removes excess fat, tissue and skin from the breasts. Knowing the right choice depends on your individual needs, and it is important to understand the differences between a breast lift and a breast reduction before making any decisions. McLain Surgical Arts, led by cosmetic surgeon Dr. Landon D. McLain, provides breast lifts and reductions to patients in Huntsville, Madison, Florence, Decatur, Scottsboro, Cullman, Athens, Alabama, and surrounding locations.

Why women opt for breast lift or reduction

Many women choose to undergo either a breast lift or breast reduction for various reasons. One common motivation is to regain a more youthful and perky breast appearance. Over time, factors such as pregnancy, breastfeeding, weight loss, or the natural aging process can cause the breasts to sag or lose volume. A breast lift can help restore a more uplifted and firm breast shape, giving women a boost in self-confidence.

On the other hand, some women may opt for a breast reduction due to physical discomfort caused by excessively large breasts. Large breasts can lead to back, neck, and shoulder pain, as well as difficulty finding properly fitting clothing. A breast reduction can alleviate these issues by removing excess breast tissue and reshaping the breasts to a more proportional size.

Ultimately, the decision between a breast lift and breast reduction is highly personal and should be discussed with a skilled cosmetic surgeon. They can evaluate your specific concerns and goals, helping you determine which procedure is best suited to meet your needs.

Understanding the difference between breast lift and reduction surgeries

To understand the difference between a breast lift and breast reduction surgery, it’s important to grasp their primary goals. A breast lift, also known as mastopexy, is focused on elevating and reshaping sagging breasts to create a more youthful appearance. This procedure involves removing excess skin and tightening the surrounding tissues to provide better support. On the other hand, breast reduction surgery aims to reduce the size and weight of the breasts by removing excess fat, tissue, and skin. This procedure is often chosen by women with larger breasts who experience physical discomfort and desire a more proportionate shape.

Both procedures can be performed by a skilled cosmetic surgeon who specializes in breast surgeries. It’s crucial to consult with a surgeon who can evaluate your individual needs and goals to determine the best course of action. Understanding the differences between a breast lift and a breast reduction is key to making an informed decision about which procedure is right for you.

Breast lift vs. reduction – Pros and Cons

When deciding between a breast lift or reduction, it is important to consider the pros and cons of each procedure.

A breast lift offers numerous benefits, including the ability to reshape and lift sagging breasts, resulting in a more youthful and perky appearance. This procedure can also boost self-confidence and improve body image. However, it is important to note that a breast lift does not significantly change the size of the breasts.

On the other hand, a breast reduction can provide relief from physical discomfort caused by excessively large breasts. This procedure can alleviate back, neck, and shoulder pain, as well as make it easier to find clothing that fits properly. Additionally, a breast reduction can enhance the overall proportion of the body.

Before making a decision, it is crucial to consult with a skilled cosmetic surgeon who can assess your specific needs and goals. They can provide personalized recommendations and help you determine the best course of action.

What to expect during recovery

Recovery is an important aspect to consider when deciding between a breast lift or reduction. Understanding what to expect during this time can help you prepare and make an informed decision.

After a breast lift or reduction, you can expect some discomfort and swelling. Your surgeon will provide you with specific instructions for managing the pain and reducing swelling, which may include medication and wearing a compression garment. It’s important to follow these instructions closely to ensure a smooth recovery.

You will also need to take some time off from work and limit your physical activity during the initial healing period. Your surgeon will advise you on how long you should avoid strenuous activities and when you can gradually resume your normal routine.

It’s common to experience some bruising and soreness, which will gradually fade over time. Your breasts may also be wrapped in bandages or surgical dressings, which will need to be changed regularly.

It’s crucial to attend all follow-up appointments with your surgeon to monitor your progress and address any concerns. They will provide guidance on when you can start wearing a bra again and when you can resume exercising.

Recovery times vary for each individual, but on average, most patients are able to resume their normal activities within a few weeks. It’s important to be patient with the healing process and give your body the time it needs to fully recover.

By understanding what to expect during the recovery process, you can make an informed decision about whether a breast lift or reduction is right for you. Remember to consult with a skilled cosmetic surgeon who can provide personalized advice based on your individual needs and goals.

Nipple Reduction Surgery

Breasts differ largely in their appearance, shape, and size. In many cases, the nipples and areolae or pigmented areas around the nipples also vary in nature. While there is no medical problem with such asymmetry, some women may feel it reduces the attractiveness of their breasts.

Areola reduction surgery can help you achieve more symmetrical areolae. In this procedure, the surgeon will decrease the diameter of oversized areolae to bring them into balance with the breast size. This surgery can be a standalone procedure although it is also possible to combine it with a breast reduction or augmentation or a breast lift.

Double board certified oral & maxillofacial and cosmetic surgeon Dr. Landon D. McLain provides nipple and areola reduction surgery to patients in Huntsville, Madison, Florence, Decatur, Scottsboro, Cullman, Athens, Alabama, and surrounding locations.

Is Areola Reduction Right for You?

If you answer yes to any of the following questions, you are a good candidate for areola reduction surgery.

  • Have your areolae changed in size and shape after pregnancy or breastfeeding?
  • Have you lost a lot of weight and find it has caused your areolae to stretch considerably?
  • Do you have areolae that appear protruding or puffy?
  • Is the areola on one breast smaller or larger in size than the one on the other breast?
  • Are you unhappy with the overall size of your areola?
  • Are you a woman past your early 20s?

Areola reduction surgery in women is done only after the breasts have completely grown. In men, it may be done at an earlier age.

Things to Know About the Surgery

Areola reduction surgery is a safe and proven procedure that takes around an hour to complete. It may be done at the hospital or in the surgeon’s office. A local anesthetic is commonly used, but sometimes, the surgeon may see it fit to use general anesthesia.

One the effects of the anesthetic kick in, the surgeon makes a cut along the circumference of the existing areola to remove a doughnut-sized bit of tissue. This cut is placed in the pigmented region so that any scar that remains is rendered less visible.

Next, the surgeon places a permanent suture within the breast to secure the new areola in place and make sure it doesn’t stretch over time. They will close the initial cut using sutures and apply a surgical dressing. You may be advised to wear a postsurgical bra to support your breasts for a few weeks.

What to Expect Post-surgery

Healing from areola reduction surgery does not take beyond a week. Most people get back to work in a day or two. Some bruising and swelling may be present for the first few days, and this will obscure the effects of the surgery. Once the swelling has reduced, the breasts settle into position and then, you will be able to appreciate the surgery outcome. The scar left around the areola may take up to a year to heal.

Replace breast implants

If you are seeking a breast augmentation cosmetic surgery, you are likely to have questions on the longevity of the results, and how often you may need to have revision procedures or replace your breast implants in the future. The fact is that is there no fixed timeline for the sustainability of breast implants, and each patient will experience different results.

However, you can draw assurance from the fact that as many as 80 percent or more women will be able to enjoy the results of their breast implant surgery for at least 10 to 20 years. Only about one in five women may require an implant removal or replacement within the first 10 years.

These figures were reported by the FDA in 2011. In any case, the surgical techniques and implant qualities have significantly improved since then, so chances are that the current longevity of breast implant results would be even higher.

McLain Surgical Arts, led by cosmetic surgeon Dr. Landon D. McLain, provides cosmetic and reconstructive procedures to patients in Huntsville, Madison, Florence, Decatur, Scottsboro, Cullman, Athens, Alabama, and surrounding locations.

Aging Effects

You should be aware at the outset that a breast augmentation cosmetic surgery does not mean that the natural aging process in the breast tissue will stop or slow down. Over the years, as your skin elasticity reduces and the effects of gravity, pregnancy, weight fluctuations, hormonal changes and illness take their toll, your breasts will tend to sag or the skin with get stretched even with implants.

Therefore, even if your breast implants have not developed any medical complications, you may want to have them removed or replaced at some stage in the future. At that point, your surgeon may suggest an additional breast lift surgery to restore the firmer and perkier look of your breasts along with the implant removal or replacement procedure.

Implant Leakage or Capsular Contracture

Implant failure may occur in exceptional cases at any point of time. Damage to your implant would cause the saline or silicone filling to leak out. Although it does not always mean that a breast implant removal or replacement is medically required, you may want to undergo a revision because of cosmetic considerations.

The scar tissue surrounding your implants begins to harden, it can cause tightness and pain in the breasts. Your breasts may also appear hard and unnatural. This condition can be corrected with a breast implant removal or exchange surgery.

Change of Personal Preferences

A majority of women who seek breast implant removal or exchange do it out of personal choice, and not because it is a medical necessity. You may want to restore your natural breast appearance, or wish to change the type or size of your implants according to the changing shape of your body over time.

For these reasons, most women with implants may expect to undergo a breast implant removal or replacement surgery at least once in their lifetime. Cosmetic surgeon Dr. Landon D. McLain receives patients from Huntsville, Madison, Florence, Decatur, Scottsboro, Cullman, Athens, Alabama, and nearby areas for safe and proven cosmetic procedures.

Capsular Contracture

Implant rupture and capsular contracture are two key reasons why breast implant removal cosmetic surgery may become a medical necessity. A hole or tear in the implant can cause the saline or silicone filling to leak out from the implant shell. In case of capsular contracture, the tightening scar tissue can cause pain or discomfort in the breasts. Breast implant removal will eliminate these problems.

McLain Surgical Arts, led by cosmetic surgeon Dr. Landon D. McLain, provides cosmetic and reconstructive procedures to patients in Huntsville, Madison, Florence, Decatur, Scottsboro, Cullman, Athens, Alabama, and surrounding communities.

Removal of Saline or Silicone Implants

When a saline implant gets ruptured, it will deflate within a few hours and the saline solution will get reabsorbed by the body. While it poses no threat to your health, your breast shape will appear distorted because of implant deflation. If the silicone implant gets damage, the implant volume will usually remain unaffected because the silicone gel has a high viscosity, and will stay contained in the implant capsule.

In a saline implant deflation, you can have the breast implant removal cosmetic surgery under local anesthesia to take out the implant with a small cut. But prior to that, you and your surgeon should closely evaluate whether your breast tissue is sagging or has stretched out over the years.

Depending on your personal cosmetic goals, your surgeon may recommend a breast lift to be performed along with implant removal. This procedure will involve general anesthesia and will more elaborate than just a saline implant removal.

In case of a silicone implant removal, the surgeon will carefully consider which surgical technique to apply in your case. In case of implant rupture, the silicone material must be cleared from the implant pocket, which will probably involve general anesthesia. From an external exam or even with a radiology scan, it may not be easy to determine the actual condition of the silicone implant following a rupture or capsular contracture.

Once the surgery begins, your surgeon will be able to decide whether to perform a total or partial capsulectomy or apply the en bloc capsulectomy technique. In each case, the surgeon’s goal will be to ensure your 100% safety and obtain the best medical and aesthetic outcomes.

Breast Implant Removal with Breast Lift

Aging, pregnancy, gravitational forces, hormonal changes and other factors are likely to loosen your breast tissue over time, particularly if you have been using larger sized breast implants. If the breast skin has lost a considerable amount of elasticity, the skin may not retract to its youthful position after the breast implant removal.

In this situation, your surgeon may recommend that you should undergo breast implant removal combined with a breast lift surgery. Breast lift will involve excision of the loose skin, tightening of the breast tissue and muscle, and sometimes even the repositioning or resizing of areolas. This will restore a youthful and tighter looking breast appearance.

How to Prepare For Breast Implant Removal | Huntsville | ScottsboroBreast Augmentation Revision

The goal of breast revision surgery is to replace old breast implants with new ones. It may be done to change or improve the appearance of the breasts or while updating the implant material. Sometimes breast revision surgery may include a breast lift, or a breast reduction.

Breast augmentation revision is ideal for women who want to change the size of the implant, deal with any deformity issues, or restore their original appearance.

There are many factors that could cause your breast implants to differ from your original expectations or appearance. These factors could include changes to your breast tissue due to pregnancy and breastfeeding, weight loss or weight gain.

You may be an excellent candidate for breast augmentation revision based on such factors as:

  • Imaging has revealed a leak in your implant
  • You are experiencing implant deflation
  • Scar tissue is tightening around the implant
  • Your implants have shifted from their original position
  • You would like to change the size or shape of your implant
  • You have experienced weight loss or weight gain, and your breast tissue has changed

Over time, breast implants can leak or become malpositioned, and the overlying breast tissue can change, as well. This may create an appearance or feel to the breasts that is uncomfortable, or undesirable.

Many breast implants have a lifetime warranty on the actual implant device, but after ten years the costs to replace the implants are no longer covered. This is why many women may choose to replace their implants at or around the 10-year time frame.

Dr. McLain will discuss with you the best options for you and your body and whether breast augmentation revision is right for you.

Breast revision surgery allows a patient the opportunity to replace or remove breast implants in the future according to her needs. Steps involved in breast revision surgery will not be very different from the original augmentation mammaplasty. At the time of initial consultation, the surgeon will discuss various steps of the procedure.

The patient should feel free to ask questions about the procedure, and make a well-considered choice. Experienced cosmetic surgeon Dr. Landon D. McLain provides breast revision surgery to patients in Huntsville, Madison, Florence, Decatur, Scottsboro, Cullman, Athens, Alabama, and other cities and suburbs in The Yellowhammer State.

Anesthesia

The surgeon may perform breast revision using general anesthesia or local anesthesia with sedation. This will be determined prior to the procedure. Once the patient is brought into the surgery room, she will be placed under anesthesia before the procedure is initiated.

General anesthesia will be performed by an anesthesiologist or a nurse anesthetist. They will mostly remain present in the surgery room through the procedure to monitor the patient’s response to anesthesia. The patient will be unconscious, will feel no pain, and have no recollection of the procedure when she wakes up from anesthesia.

Incision Placement

The surgeon will discuss the patient’s incision preferences during the customized surgery planning. If similar size and shape of implants are used to replace the old ones, the surgeon will use the old incision lines so that no new scarring is created. The implants will be placed in the existing breast pockets with minimal tissue modification.

But if the new implants are larger or smaller than the previous implants, or their shape is different, some tissue modification to adjust the breast pockets will be required. New placement of incisions may also be necessary. In any case, the surgeon will ensure that the incisions are placed in discreet, natural creases to minimize scarring.

Implant Insertion

Through the incisions, the surgeon will insert the new implants into the breast pockets. This step is easier in case of saline implants, which can be inserted in a deflated shape, and filling can be done after that. In any case, ultra cohesive and soft silicone implants can also be inserted comfortably through the incisions.

The implants will be adjusted into their desired position above or below the pectoral muscle as per the pre-determined surgery plan.

Incision Closure

Once the new implants are placed into correct position, the surgeon will close the incisions using dissolvable or removable sutures. Temporary drain tubes may be placed below the incision sites to collect excess blood and fluid. Both the sutures and drains may be removed at the same time in about seven to 10 days.

Breast Lift

An additional step of breast lift surgery may have to be performed in some cases where the breast tissue is significantly drooping, or where the patient wants breast implant removal instead of replacement. Breast Revision Cosmetic Surgery Recovery | Huntsville | ScottsboroAfter the primary breast augmentation surgery, it is possible that some point in the future, the implants may get damaged, lose their natural shape, or move from their desired position. This may necessitate the need for a breast revision surgery. At the time of pre-op consultation, the surgeon will explain all aspects of breast revision, including its estimated recovery process.

The surgeon will also provide post-operative care instructions to help ensure that the patient has an easier and faster recovery. Fantastic and innovative cosmetic surgeon Dr. Landon D. McLain provides breast revision surgery to patients in Huntsville, Madison, Florence, Decatur, Scottsboro, Cullman, Athens Alabama, and surrounding locations.

Variations in Recovery

Recovery process in case of breast revision can vary depending on whether a breast implant replacement or breast implant removal surgery has been performed. Breast implant replacement will usually be a simpler surgery as the same incision lines can be used to remove the existing implants and replace them with new implants.

However, if replacement implants are of a larger or smaller size, modifications to the breast pocket will have to be made to accommodate the new implants. This can increase the invasiveness of the procedure and the subsequent recovery phase. In case of implant removal, the procedure is often accompanied by breast lift. This will be more complicated and invasive, involving a longer recovery period.

In each case, the length and ease of recovery will also vary according to the surgical techniques applied by the surgeon, the patient’s age, health and her natural ability to heal.

Immediate Phase after Surgery

Once the breast revision procedure is completed, the surgeon’s staff will shift the patient to a separate recovery area for observation. The procedure is usually performed under general anesthesia, and the patient may need a few hours to recover fully from its effect.

It is a prudent idea for the patient to arrange for someone who can drive her back home after the procedure. Breast revision is a major procedure, and ideally someone should stay with the patient for the first two or three days to assist with daily chores. The breasts will initially be covered in dressings, and a temporary drain may be placed beneath the skin to collect excess blood or fluid. The patient will be required to wear a special support bra for the first few weeks to promote faster healing.

Returning to Normal Activities

Once the sutures and temporary drain tubes are removed after the first seven to 10 days, most patients can return to work, as long as it does not involve heavy lifting of weights or vigorous physical activity and strain. Strenuous exercises should be avoided for at least four to six weeks to allow time for proper healing.

As far as possible, the patient should try to rest in a semi-upright position in the first few days to support better healing.
