Saline Implants vs Silicone Implants | Huntsville Cosmetic SurgeryPatients considering breast augmentation have the option of choosing between silicone and saline breast implants. During your consultation, your surgeon will explain the differences between saline and silicone breast implants and help you decide which option is best for you. McLain Surgical Arts, led by cosmetic plastic surgeon Dr. Landon D. McLain, provides breast augmentation surgery to patients in Huntsville, Madison, Florence, Decatur, Scottsboro, Cullman, Athens, Alabama, and surrounding locations.

Appearance

Silicone implant shells are designed to sit over the natural curvature of the breasts, mimicking natural fat tissue and giving a more natural appearance. Saline breast implants are often over-filled and appear rounder, fuller, and firmer.

Texture and Touch

Silicone and saline breast implants differ in texture, with silicone implants feeling closer to soft, natural fat in the breasts. Saline implants feel firmer.

Surgical Incisions

Saline and silicone breast implants are placed in different areas of the chest, and each type of implant requires a different surgical incision. Silicone implants are pre-filled at the factory and require a larger incision for placement. Saline implants are inserted into the chest cavity before being filled with saline solution during surgery, requiring a smaller incision.

Which Last Longer?

Saline and silicone breast implants are durable, and generally last about the same amount of time. With use of either implant, the patient will need to have them removed or replaced after a number of years.

Rippling and Rupture

It is always a possibility for breast implants to rupture, although it is uncommon.

Silicone implants can pose a danger in the event of rupture, as the silicone gel may seep into the body. Since saline solution can be absorbed by the body, saline implants are safer. Capsular contracture or use of incorrectly sized implants can cause rippling, and is an equal risk with either implant type. In extreme cases, rippling can appear on the surface of the skin. McLain, provides breast augmentation surgery to patients in Huntsville, Madison, Florence, Decatur, Scottsboro, Cullman, Athens, Alabama, and surrounding locations.

How Long is Recovery from Eyelid Surgery? | Huntsville Cosmetic SurgeryBlepharoplasty, otherwise known as eyelid surgery, is a cosmetic procedure that can remove excess skin, add or remove fat from the eyelids. This procedure involves small incisions and stitches, typically made close to the lash line or within the  eyelid. During your surgical consultation, your surgeon will inform you of your estimated recovery time. McLain Surgical Arts, led by cosmetic plastic surgeon Dr. Landon D. McLain, provides eyelid surgery to patients in Huntsville, Madison, Florence, Decatur, Scottsboro, Cullman, Athens, Alabama, and surrounding locations.

Eyelid Surgery Recovery Time

Recovery following eyelid surgery will involve bruising, swelling, and gradual healing of the incision site. Patients should expect bruising for the first 2 to 3 weeks following surgery. Swelling varies per person, and could occur for over 8 weeks. Depending on the extent of your surgery, you may be able to return to work after 5 to 10 days, depending on your comfort. Scars may take a year or longer to begin fading.

Recovery Experience

After your surgery, you may need to remain in the recovery room for a period of time to be monitored by your doctor. You will need someone to drive you home from your procedure and to help assist you at home for the first few days. You may temporarily experience:

  • Sensitivity to light
  • Blurred or double vision
  • Puffy or numb eyelids
  • Watery eyes
  • Swelling and bruising
  • Pain and discomfort

Tips for an Easier Recovery

You’ll have an easier recovery period by first preparing to be out of commission for a few days. You’ll want to stock up your refrigerator the day before surgery and prepare your bedside. Take adequate time off of work, and don’t overextend yourself. You will need to use ice packs and ointments to help with scarring and swelling, and you may need to wear a hat or sunglasses to protect your eyes when you leave the house. Cosmetic plastic surgeon Dr. Landon D. McLain, provides eyelid surgery to patients in Huntsville, Madison, Florence, Decatur, Scottsboro, Cullman, Athens, Alabama, and surrounding locations.

Otoplasty - Cosmetic Surgery for Your Ears | Huntsville Cosmetic SurgeonAre you unhappy with how your ears look on your head? Does your child have ears that stick out? This can be difficult to deal with, especially where children are concerned. That is why you may want to consider Otoplasty, also known as cosmetic ear surgery.

You might choose to have cosmetic ear surgery if your ears stick too far from your head. You might also consider Otoplasty if your ears are misshapen due to an injury or birth defect. Whatever your reason, Dr. McLain will discuss this with you and develop a plan to make your ears more visually pleasing to you.

What can ear surgery treat?

  • Overly large ears
  • Adult dissatisfaction with previous ear surgery
  • Protruding ears on one or both sides in varying degrees and not associated with hearing loss

Children are especially good candidates for ear surgery. Such a child would be:

  • Healthy, without a life-threatening illness or intreated chronic ear infections
  • Generally, 5 years old, or when a child’s ear cartilage is stable enough for correction
  • Able to follow instructions well
  • Able to communicate their feelings

Teenagers and adults who are good candidates for ear surgery are:

  • Healthy individuals who do not have life-threatening illnesses or medical conditions that can impair healing
  • Individuals with a positive outlook and specific goals in mind
  • Nonsmokers

After your surgery, you may notice soreness for a few days, numbness and tingling for several weeks, and slight bruising for around two weeks. Dr. McLain will discuss with you what you will need to do before the surgery, and how to care for your ears post surgery.

If you want to correct the shape or positioning of your ears, make an appointment for a consultation with Dr. McLain. He will discuss with you your expectations, what you may expect from the surgery and what he can accomplish for you with ear surgery.

Can I Breast Feed After Breast Augmentation? | Huntsville SurgeryIt’s possible for most mothers to breastfeed with implants. Based on this, it depends on the placement and size of the implants. Whether or not you can breastfeed following implants also depends on the type of surgery you have had. There should be no problem breastfeeding if the incision is through your armpit or under the fold of your breasts.

Taking this account, if the incision is made around the areola for inserting the implants, there is a high chance the milk ducts may have been cut. McLain Surgical Arts, led by reliable cosmetic plastic surgeon Dr. Landon D. McLain provides breast augmentation surgery to patients in Huntsville, Madison, Florence, Decatur, Scottsboro, Cullman, Athens, Alabama, and surrounding locations.

Implants Usually Don’t Affect Breastfeeding

Implants are generally placed under the chest muscles or behind the milk glands. This doesn’t affect milk supply. Pertaining to this, the depth and location of the incision may affect a mother’s ability to breastfeed. There is less risk of problems if the surgery keeps the areola intact. This is the dark area surrounding the nipple.

The nerves around the nipples play a major role in breastfeeding. Hormonal levels oxytocin and prolactin are increased by the suckling sensation made by a baby. Prolactin triggers milk production in a woman’s body while oxytocin helps in the let-down. Sensation is reduced when the nerves are damaged. Incisions made through the armpit, under the breast or belly button interfere less with breastfeeding.

Breastfeeding with Implants is Largely Safe

There haven’t been major clinical reports of issues with breastfeeding in mothers with silicone implants as per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. There is no clear method for detecting silicon levels accurately in breast milk. Silicon levels were found to be the same in the breast milk of women with implants and without implants as per a 2007 study.

There is no evidence of birth defects or any other risks in babies born to women with breast implants. However, breast implants are not completely free of risks. These are a few of them:

  • You may need additional surgery for removal or corrections
  • Changes in nipple and breast sensation
  • Capsular contracture which refers to scar tissue formation around the implant. Capsular contracture squeezes the implant.
  • Rupture of implants
  • Breast pain

Other Factors Effecting Breastfeeding with Implants

The majority of women with breast implants have no problem with breastfeeding. The original state of the breasts before the cosmetic surgery and the type of incision used determines whether you can breastfeed or not. In accumulation of all of this, having breast implants can affect the supply of breast milk in some cases. In most cases, the amount of breast milk is not affected at all because of implants.

You may worry about the effects of breastfeeding on your implants. Breasts change their size and shape during pregnancy as your body prepares for breastfeeding. While this won’t affect your implants, it may change the shape and size of your breasts. You may be able to decrease the need for further revisions or adjustments by waiting until you have had children to get breast enhancement done.

Changing the Shape of Your Face with Rhinoplasty | HuntsvilleAre you ready to make some changes to your appearance? Do you have trouble breathing through your nose? Rhinoplasty, commonly referred to as a nose job, may be the answer.

Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure used for altering and reconstructing the nose. The motivation for rhinoplasty may be to change the appearance of the nose, improve breathing, or both.

There are two types of plastic surgery used in a rhinoplasty depending upon what is the ultimate goal and outcome that you would like:

  • Reconstructive surgery restores the form and functions of the nose.
  • Cosmetic surgery changes the appearance of the nose.

This surgical procedure may enhance facial harmony and the proportions of your nose. It can also correct impaired breathing caused by structural defects in the nose.

Here are some things that rhinoplasty can treat:

  • Nose size in relation to facial balance
  • Nose profile with visible humps or depressions on the bridge
  • Nose width at the bridge
  • Nasal tip that is enlarged, drooping or hooked
  • Nostrils that are large, wide, or upturned
  • Nasal asymmetry

The upper part of the structure of the nose is bone, and the lower part is cartilage. Rhinoplasty can change bone, cartilage, skin or all three.

Rhinoplasty may also be used to correct a deviated septum. Dr. McLain will examine your nasal structure as it relates to airflow and breathing. A deviated septum is one of the most common causes of breathing impairment.

Should he determine that rhinoplasty can help with your breathing, Dr. McLain will adjust the nasal structure to produce better alignment, which will make breathing a lot easier.

When planning rhinoplasty, Dr. McLain will consider your other facial features, the skin on your nose, and what you would like to change. If you are a candidate for surgery, Dr. McLain will develop a customized plan for you.

At your consultation, Dr. McLain will discuss with you your goals and your overall health. He will also answer all of your questions as you consider whether rhinoplasty is right for you.

How Long Can I Return To Regular Activity After A BBL? | HuntsvilleBrazilian Butt Lift or BBL is a popular cosmetic surgery procedure among both women and men. The procedure is designed to sculpt the lower body by increasing the size of the buttocks. Most patients, understandably, are curious about the recovery timeline and when they can resume regular activity following a BBL.

In majority of cases, patients need between 4 to 6 weeks to recover completely from the BBL procedure. While healing is complete, your body may continue absorbing injected fat for a few more months. You should be able to resume a sedentary lifestyle after 4 to 6 weeks. Based on this, it may take up to 8 weeks before you can start exercising.

McLain Surgical Arts, led by cosmetic plastic surgeon Dr. Landon D. McLain, provides Brazilian butt lift surgery to patients in Huntsville, Madison, Florence, Decatur, Scottsboro, Cullman, Athens, Alabama, and surrounding locations.

Resuming Regular Routine Following a BBL

BBL patients are advised to wait at least 4 to 6 weeks before they resume normal routine. You need to allow your body enough time to heal and recover following a plastic surgery. It will take a few weeks for the transferred fat cells to stabilize at the buttock area. Downtime ensures the butt establishes blood supply. Exercising or performing strenuous activities may impact fat transfer and affect the overall BBL results.

Activity Timeline Following a BBL

1 – 2 Week Mark

Brazilian Butt Lift patients should desist from placing any pressure on the buttocks in the first two weeks of recovery. Your surgeon will allow you to sit during this time only when absolutely necessary. You would be asked to use a donut shaped pillow to prevent putting any direct pressure on the buttocks. You would need to sleep on your stomach or side to avoid straining the posterior.

3 Week Mark

You should be able to resume less-intensive activities during the third week of recovery. You would need to make use of a soft cushion while sitting. Refrain from putting any pressure on the backside during this period. If you are healing well, your surgeon may clear you for very light cardiovascular activities, such as elliptical exercise and walking. The focus should be on weight training instead of aerobic activity.

4 – 5 Week Mark

Patients would need to continue using a cushion during this period when sitting for extended periods. You may be able to add bicycling and faster-paced walking. Your doctor may clear you to go to work at this time if you can use a soft cushion while sitting. Relaxed activities, such as swimming is advisable.

6 – 8 Week Mark

Regular routine, including vigorous activities, may be allowed from six weeks if your body continues to respond well to the procedure. You should be able to resume jogging and strenuous chores at work. It is important that you give your body enough time to heal since the grafted fat behaves in the same manner as fat cells. Weight fluctuations may cause an increase or decrease in the buttocks volume.

Cosmetic surgeon Dr. Landon D. McLain receives patients from Huntsville, Madison, Florence, Decatur, Scottsboro, Cullman, Athens, Alabama, and nearby areas for Brazilian butt lift surgery.

Fat Transfer to Breast vs. Implants | Huntsville Cosmetic SurgeryBreast augmentation has consistently been a popular cosmetic procedure across the world. Pertaining to this, a crucial decision faced by all women seeking to enhance the shape and size of their breasts is whether to choose implants or fat grafting. Both procedures are safe and offer high-quality results. Moreover, they come with their unique characteristics.

During your initial consultation, your surgeon will help you decide between getting a fat graft or an implant-based breast augmentation. McLain Surgical Arts, led by cosmetic plastic surgeon Dr. Landon D. McLain, provides breast augmentation with fat transfer and breast augmentation with implants to patients in Huntsville, Madison, Florence, Decatur, Scottsboro, Cullman, Athens, Alabama, and surrounding communities.

Advantages of Fat Grafting Breast Augmentation

Fat transfer involves the body’s natural fat cells to augment the breasts. Fat is the most natural filling material and one of the safest. There is little risk of allergic reactions and the procedure can make your breasts appear and feel more natural. You don’t need to worry about scarring when it comes to fat injections. There is no long-term breast thinning or rippling either that is a common risk of breast implants.

Limitations of Fat Grafting Breast Augmentation

Every surgical procedure carries risks. Fat transfer to breasts might interfere with breast cancer screening in a few cases. There is a risk of calcification. The procedure is not recommended for patients seeking a significant change in their breast size.

In most cases, the cost of fat grafting comes to be more than that of breast augmentation. There is also a risk of nodules and lump formation in the breasts. Irregularities and indentations may occur at the donor site if the procedure is performed by an inexperienced surgeon.

Advantages of Breast Implants

Breast implant procedures have been improved over the years to provide predictable and reliable changes in size and appearance. Breast implants give increased control over the breast size. Most implants in use today offer natural-feeling and safe results. Fat grafting involves removing fat at a donor site. Implants don’t require such additional procedures. Implants can also be removed easily during a corrective surgery.

Limitations of Breast Implants

There is a high risk of leakage and rupture in breast implants. They need to be changed after a few years. There is a risk of rippling and visibility as well, especially when the implants placed are too large for the breast tissue. There is a risk of capsular contracture in breast implants. This is when the scar tissue thickens around the implant causing distortion and hardening.

Fat Grafting vs. Breast Implants – Which is Better for Me?

There are several factors that need to be considered while choosing between the two. You should consider fat grafting if want breasts that look and appear more natural. There is the added benefit of contouring another body part through liposuction, such as the abdomen, thighs, or flanks. Breast implants are the right choice if you are seeking a more dramatic increase in size. However, your breast tissue should have enough elasticity to accommodate the implants for safe results.

Cosmetic surgeon Dr. Landon D. McLain receives patients from Huntsville, Madison, Florence, Decatur, Scottsboro, Cullman, Athens, Alabama, and nearby areas for breast augmentation with fat transfer and breast augmentation with implants surgery.

Are your eyes making you look tired? Do you have more difficulty getting eye makeup to look as it once did? Is your vision impaired because your eyelids are sagging?

These are all reasons to consider eyelid surgery, also known as blepharoplasty.

Whether you want to improve your appearance, or you are experiencing functional problems with your eyelids – eyelid surgery can rejuvenate the area surrounding your eyes.

As we age, our eyelids stretch, and the muscles supporting them weaken. Surgery to correct this can be performed on the upper lids, lower lids, or both.

Some things that eyelid surgery can correct include:

  • Bags under the eyes
  • Fatty deposits that appear as puffiness on the eyelids
  • Loose or sagging skin on the eyelids that sometimes causes vision problems
  • Drooping lower eyelids that reveal white below the iris
  • Excess skin and wrinkles that appear below the lower lids

The best candidates for an eye lift are people who are in good health and who have a realistic expectation of what they want. Most are 35 years or older, but if baggy or droopy eyelids run in your family, you may decide to have the procedure at an earlier age.

Eyelid surgery won’t get rid of dark circles under the eyes, crow’s feet or other facial wrinkles. It is often done along with other procedures such as laser resurfacing, filler injections, or forehead lifts.

Dr. McLain will discuss all of this in your consultation. He will help you decide what you want and what you can expect from your eyelid surgery. He will also tell you what you will need to do pre-op and after your surgery.

After eyelid surgery, expect to stay home from work and limit your activities for several days while your eyelids heal. You may also experience dry eyes for a few days.

If you are considering eyelid surgery, contact Dr. McLain’s office to schedule your consultation, today.

How to Know If It’s Time for a Brow Lift | Huntsville Cosmetic Surgeon A brow lift, also known as a forehead lift, reduces lines and wrinkles, raises sagging eyebrows, and improves frown lines. It also raises sagging eyebrows that can cause hooding, either from aging or genetics.

The best age for a brow lift varies from person to person. It will depend on your genetics, diet and skincare routine, and is a common procedure for people between the ages of 40 and 65.

As we age, wrinkles appear on the forehead. Frown lines between the brows – also known as “elevens” can make us look angry or too serious all the time. As we age, the skin relaxes, and this can give us a tired look. This also causes the brow to drop, hooding our upper eyelids.

There are two methods to lift your forehead and eyebrow areas:

  • Classic lift: this involves one continuous cut beginning at the level of your ears and going around your hairline.
  • Endoscopic lift: Dr. McLain will make a few shorter cuts in your scalp, then insert a scope to help make the changes.

Because the cuts are smaller, the endoscopic lift is less invasive than the classic lift. You will have minimal scarring and a shorter recovery time.

This surgery is often done on an outpatient basis and usually takes about two hours to perform. When you have your initial consultation with Dr. McLain, he will discuss all of this, as well as your goals for having this surgery.

Your recovery time will depend upon which surgery type you had. In either case, you will have stitches or staples that will need to be removed in about a week post op. You will have some swelling and bruising, which should lessen as the days pass.

If you’re tired of looking tired, contact Dr. McLain’s office and make an appointment for your consultation. He and his staff will be happy to answer your questions and guide you to the result your looking for.
