The 20s

Rhinoplasty and Septoplasty – Which is Right for You?

So you are ready to change the look of your face, particularly your nose. Perhaps you think it is too big for your face, or it has a bump, or is crooked. Then you may be a candidate for rhinoplasty.

Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty, commonly referred to as a nose job, is a plastic surgery procedure for altering and reconstructing the nose. While rhinoplasty may be used to change the appearance of the nose, it may also improve breathing.

What rhinoplasty can do:

• Change nose width at the bridge or in the size and position of the nostril

Septoplasty

Septoplasty is a surgical procedure to straighten the bone and cartilage between your two nostrils known as the septum. This surgery is used to correct a deviated septum.

A deviated, or crooked septum occurs when the septum is shifted towards one side of the nasal cavity. This can cause difficulty breathing and reduce airflow due to blockage of the nasal airway.

During this surgery, the septum is straightened and repositioned to the middle of the nose. The procedure may include cutting and removing parts of the septum before reinserting them into the correction position.

You may find that you will want rhinoplasty to change facial symmetry, but you also need septoplasty to correct your deviated septum. These are often performed during the same surgery.

Thigh Lift Surgery

When exercise and diet have failed in creating a more sculpted look, you may consider thigh lift surgery. This surgery reshapes the thighs by reducing excess skin and fat, resulting in smoother skin and better-proportioned contours of the thigh area.

There are many ways to remove body hair, from waxing to threading to shaving. But laser hair removal is one of the few options that offers a more permanent approach to getting rid of unwanted body hair.

Laser hair removal works by sending the light of a laser through the pigment in the hair. It is more than just zapping unwanted hair. It is a medical procedure, which Dr. McLain is trained to perform.

There are some things you will have to do before undergoing laser hair removal, which Dr. McLain will discuss with you at your consultation. Some of these include the following:

• Limit plucking, waxing and electrolysis for six weeks

• Avoid sun exposure six weeks before and six weeks after the procedure

When you go in for your treatment, the hair will be trimmed to a few millimeters above the skin’s surface. Usually a topical numbing medicine is applied 20 to 30 minutes before the procedure to help with the sting of laser pulses.

The laser equipment will be adjusted according to the color, thickness and location of the hair being treated as well as your skin color.

Lasers are useful for removing hair from the face, chin, arm, underarm, leg, bikini, and other areas. Benefits of laser hair removal include:

• Speed: each laser pulse takes a fraction of a second and can treat many hairs at the same time. Small areas, such as the upper lip, can be treated in less than a minute.

• Precision: lasers can target dark, coarse hairs while leaving surrounding skin undamaged.

• Predictability: most patients have permanent hair loss after three to seven sessions.

Are diet and exercise not giving you the flat tummy that you would like to have? Then you may want to consider a tummy tuck.

Abdominoplasty, or a tummy tuck, will flatten the abdomen and tighten the abdominal muscles.   It is not the same as liposuction, although you may add the liposuction procedure to the tummy tuck surgery.

A tummy tuck will remove excess skin while tightening loose or separated abdominal muscles to give you a more smooth and toned physique. However, if you also have areas of stubborn fat, such as love handles, a tummy tuck alone is not likely to be the most effective option.

Liposuction, a body contouring procedure, uses suction to remove pockets of fat that are not responding to diet and exercise. While liposuction can get rid of love handles, back rolls and baby fat, it won’t address excess skin or muscle laxity, which often accompany a pregnancy or big weight loss.

Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty)

They say that the eyes are the window to the soul. As we age, the skin around our eyes may become saggy and droopy giving a tired appearance to the face causing one to look older than their years.

Eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, is a surgical procedure to improve the appearance of the eyes and surrounding area. The surgery can be performed on the upper eyelids, lower eyelids or both.

Whether you want to improve your appearance or are experiencing functional problems with your eyelids, blepharoplasty can improve the appearance for a more youthful, rested look.

As skin ages, it usually loses its elasticity. A lack of elasticity plus gravity causes skin to collect on the upper and lower eyelids. On the lower eyelid, excess skin causes wrinkles and bulges. On the upper eyelids, extra skin can actually cause vision problems.
