Liposuction Surgery
Liposuction is among the top five most sought-after surgical procedures in the US currently. Liposuction is now much less invasive and more effective due to cutting-edge surgical techniques being available.
While various techniques can be used to perform liposuction, the procedure steps remain mostly the same regardless of the technique chosen.
During the pre-operative consultation, the surgeon will explain the various steps that liposuction involves to the patient in order to familiarize them with the surgery.
Reliable cosmetic surgeon Dr. Landon D. McLain provides liposuction to patients in Huntsville, Madison, Florence, Decatur, Scottsboro, Cullman, Athens, Alabama, and surrounding locations the amazing state of Alabama.
Anesthesia
Liposuction cosmetic surgery is usually performed under local anesthesia. But in some cases, the patient may be placed under general anesthesia.
This is usually the case when the procedure involves the removal of significant amounts of fat from multiple sites or if the liposuction is done in combination with other surgical procedures. Local anesthesia may be administered in combination with mild sedation.
A popular liposuction technique is known as tumescent liposuction. This procedure only involves the use of local anesthesia, and is designed to minimize tissue trauma, discomfort and downtime. But this procedure may not be suitable for patients who experience an allergic response to lidocaine.
Incision Placement
After anesthesia, the surgeon will place tiny incisions in strategic areas in the treatment site. The size of the incisions is between a quarter to a third of an inch. An expert and perspicacious surgeon will make sure that they place the incisions in such a manner that the ensuing scarring is minimal and the healing is quickened.
Fat Tissue Reduction
The surgeon will use the incision to insert a narrow cannula to eliminate excess fat pockets. They will dislodge unwanted fat manually as the vacuum tube goes into the deeper fat layers. After the tissue breaks down, a pump or syringe connected to the other end of the cannula will be used to suction the fat out.
At this stage of the procedure, the surgeon may utilize radio frequency, laser or ultrasonic wave energy to make the fat tissue removal less invasive and more efficient. The patient will receive replacement fluids intravenously during and post liposuction to compensate for the loss of blood and fluid.
Closing the Incisions
After the liposuction procedure is over, the surgeon will seal the incisions. They may use removable or absorbable sutures to close the wounds. In most cases, the surgeon will insert temporary drain pipes beneath the skin’s surface to accumulate excess fluid.
The surgeon will remove the drains and sutures in around seven to ten days. In case the incisions are very small, the surgeon may let them remain open to attain desirable outcomes with minimal inflammation and bruising.
The procedure steps will differ if liposuction surgery is carried out along with other procedures such as body lift, tummy tuck, mommy makeover, or breast lift.
The surgeon will discuss these steps with the patient depending on the customized surgical plan. Dr. McLain receives patients from Huntsville, Madison, Florence, Decatur, Scottsboro, Cullman, Athens, Alabama, and other suburbs and neighborhoods in The Yellowhammer State for liposuction.
