If you don’t like the look of your ears, if you think they stick out too much, or if you want to refine your overall look, you may want to consider otoplasty. If your child has protruding ears, otoplasty is a relatively simple procedure to correct that before entering school.

Otoplasty refers to surgical and non-surgical procedures for correcting deformities and defects of the pinna, or outer ear. The procedure may be used for reconstructing a defective, deformed, or absent outer ear.

The objective is to make the ears more proportionate to the face. It is particularly difficult for young children who have prominent ears. Ears that stick out can make life miserable from the constant teasing by other children. In most cases, repositioning the ears back alongside the head will solve the problem.

The sooner in life the problem is corrected, the better. Ear surgery, or otoplasty can be performed on children as young as four or five years old, and of course, at any time for adults.

Good candidates for ear surgery include:

Children who are:

  • Healthy, without life-threatening illnesses or untreated chronic ear infections.
  • 5 years or older, or whose ear cartilage is stable enough.
  • Cooperative and follow instructions well.

Teenagers and Adults who are:

  • Healthy and do not have a life-threatening illness or other issues that may cause a problem with healing.
  • Positive about the outcome of ear surgery, and who have realistic expectations.
  • Non-smokers
